**Short answer:** a Unity MCP server lets your own AI agent, such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, edit scenes, run scripts and read compiler errors inside the Unity Editor. For the widest tool list, pick CoplayDev or IvanMurzak. For the official route, use Unity AI. Synagy's server is free, needs only Node and covers Roblox Studio and Blender too. Last checked: 2026-10-30.

We make Synagy, so we are not neutral. Every competitor fact below links to its source, and we say where each server, ours included, is the weaker pick. Write to [contact@synagy.org](mailto:contact@synagy.org) if something is out of date.

## The five servers at a glance

| Server | Tools | Install | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unity AI MCP (official) | scene, hierarchy, scripts, console, GameObject edits, custom C# tools | Unity 6+, package `com.unity.ai.assistant`, accept a "Pending Connection" prompt | MCP uses no credits, but needs a Unity Cloud link and the AI trial or plan | [Unity blog](https://unity.com/blog/unity-ai-mcp-how-to-get-started) |
| CoplayDev/unity-mcp | about 50 tool entry points | UPM git URL or OpenUPM; needs Python 3.10+ with `uv` | free, MIT; 15.6k GitHub stars, v10.3.0 from 2026-10-04 | [GitHub](https://github.com/CoplayDev/unity-mcp) |
| IvanMurzak/Unity-MCP | 70+ tools and 10 optional extensions | `npm i -g unity-mcp-cli`, OpenUPM or a `.unitypackage` | free; 4.6k stars; can also run inside built games | [GitHub](https://github.com/IvanMurzak/Unity-MCP) |
| CoderGamester/mcp-unity | about 35 tools, plus resources and prompts | UPM git URL and Node 18+ | free; about 2.0k stars | [GitHub](https://github.com/CoderGamester/mcp-unity) |
| Synagy | 16 Unity tools and 10 shared editor tools | the free Synagy app or an agent prompt; Node only | free, no Unity Cloud login | [Unity page](https://synagy.org/unity) |

Star counts and versions come from the repositories on 2026-10-30 and change daily.

**Choose Unity AI if … | you want the vendor's own route and already pay for Unity AI**

- **Choose CoplayDev if …**: you need the broadest tool list, such as VFX and UI groups, and can run Python
- **Choose IvanMurzak if …**: you want extensions like Timeline and Terrain, or an agent inside a shipped game
- **Choose Synagy if …**: you want one free server for Unity, Roblox Studio and Blender, with a safe local connection

## What should you check before you pick a Unity MCP server?

Three questions decide most cases:

1. **What must you install first?** Coplay needs Python and `uv`, IvanMurzak a Node CLI, the official server a Unity Cloud link. Fewer prerequisites mean fewer failures on a teammate's machine.
2. **Does the connection survive a domain reload?** Several projects list reload timeouts as their most common bug, for example [Coplay issue 657](https://github.com/CoplayDev/unity-mcp/issues/657).
3. **How many tool definitions does your agent load?** Claude Code defers MCP tools behind tool search, but other clients may load every schema up front.

> **Tip:** try one server with a throwaway project and the prompt "add a cube and a light, then enter Play mode". It shows in minutes how a server handles reloads.

## How does Synagy's Unity MCP server work?

Your agent talks to the server over stdio. The server talks to the Synagy package in the editor through a local hub on 127.0.0.1. The hub accepts no browser origins, needs a secret token and signs every call, so a web page cannot talk to your editor.

On the tool side, the server has 35 tools in total: 16 for Unity, 9 for Roblox Studio and 10 shared ones such as `engine_status` and `engine_run`. It can compile and read errors, inspect serialized fields, edit prefabs, run tests, build, profile and take a Play-mode screenshot. `unity_batch` runs up to 500 object operations as one undo step, and rolls back if one fails. If a domain reload interrupts a call, the call is delivered again.

The server updates itself and checks a SHA-256 hash first. Setup steps are on [synagy.org/mcp](https://synagy.org/mcp) and the [Unity page](https://synagy.org/unity).

## Where Synagy is the wrong pick

- **Depth in one area:** Synagy has no dedicated VFX, Shader Graph, UI Toolkit, Terrain, Cinemachine or Timeline tools. Your agent reaches them through `engine_run` with C#. Coplay and IvanMurzak cover more of these.
- **Script pre-checks:** Coplay and IvanMurzak validate scripts with Roslyn. Synagy compiles for real instead.
- **Inside a shipped game:** only IvanMurzak runs in built games.
- **Resources and prompts:** CoderGamester ships them. Synagy does not yet.
- **One-line install:** there is no npm package yet, so setup uses the Synagy app or a prompt.

## FAQ

### What is a Unity MCP server?

It is a small program that exposes Unity Editor actions as tools that an AI agent can call over the Model Context Protocol. The agent can then create objects, edit scripts, run tests and read errors without you copying anything.

### Which Unity MCP server is free?

CoplayDev, IvanMurzak, CoderGamester and Synagy are free to use; the first three are open source. Unity's official MCP server uses no credits itself, but it needs Unity AI, which starts with a 14-day trial and then costs money.

### Do I need Python or Node for a Unity MCP server?

It depends on the server. CoplayDev needs Python 3.10 or newer with `uv`. CoderGamester needs Node 18 or newer. IvanMurzak installs through a Node CLI. Synagy's server runs on Node, and the Synagy app can set it up for you.

### Can one MCP server drive Unity and Roblox Studio?

Yes, with Synagy: one server connects to Unity, Roblox Studio and Blender, and `engine_use` picks the window if two are open. The other servers on this page are Unity-only.
